June 2011 Autism NOW Webinars

Autism NOW will present two webinars this week, on June 21 and June 23.

June 21, 2-3 p.m. Eastern, Overview of Medicaid Home and Community Based Services: Joe Caldwell of the National Council on Aging will speak. Reserve your space online.

June 23, 2-3 p.m. Eastern, Establishing the Next Generation of Family Support Services: John Agosta of the Human Services Research Institute will speak. Reserve your space online.

Inclusive Theatre Performances

ArtStream will present two original musicals, That 60's Play and The Good, The Bad and The Money. They will be performed on June 24 at 7:30 p.m. and June 25 & 26 at 2:30 p.m.

These productions of made up of adult actors with intellectual disabilities and are directed by theatre professionals. Scripts are based on improvisations and original ideas from the actors.

The plays will be performed at Asbury Methodist Village's Rosborough Theatre (409 Russell Avenue) in Gaithersburg. For more information call 301-565-4567 or email info@art-stream.org. Tickets are $5 for ArtStream students and $10 for everyone else. You can buy tickets online.

Free Sensory Friendly Showing of Cars (in Virginia)

The Waddell Group and the Arlington Special Education PTA will offer a free sensory friendly showing of Cars on June 25 at 8:30 a.m.

In addition to the free movie, there will be coffee, an introduction to financial planning for families with special needs, and information from Arlington SEPTA and other resource providers.

Please RSVP online by June 22. The movie will be shown at AMC Tyson's Corner I (Routes 7 and 123) in McLean, Virginia.

LISS Informational Meetings

The Arc of Montgomery County is offering two sessions of an informational presentation to learn about Low Intensity Support Services (LISS) on June 20 and on June 22.

Both of these sessions will run from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Arc of Montgomery County (11600 Nebel Street) in Rockville.

LISS is a statewide program funded through the Developmental Disability Administration (DDA) and is designed to make use of community resources and builds on the individual's existing support network.

Topics will include an update and overview of LISS, information on how to access LISS funding, and will offer an opportunity to ask specific questions about the process. There will also be a resource table.

COPAA Webinars on Equity and Ethnicity in Special Education

The Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates will present a four-part webinar series on Equity and Ethnicity in Special Education this summer.

Teaching Flexibility & Goal-Directed Behavior to Children with ASD

The Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders is kicking off their "CASD in the Community" series, developed in partnership with DC Autism Parents with a lecture on June 14th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. called Unstuck and On Target: Teaching Flexibility & Goal Directed Behavior to Children with ASD

Lauren Kenworthy, Ph.D., Director of CASD, will describe flexibility, planning and organization problems in autism and what to do about them.

Transition Times Meeting: Transportation, Part II

Transition Times, a joint project of the Arc of Montgomery County and Potomac Community Resources, will be holding a meeting on June 15 from 7:30-9 p.m. to cover the topic of: Transportation Part II: Metro Access Orientation, Accessibility, Travel Training.

Cherrie Leporatti (Metro Orientation Services, Accessibility) and Damian P. Gregory (Travel Trainer, Independence Now, Inc.) will present at this meeting.

Presentation on Technology Tools for Literacy and Learning

The Learning Disabilities Association of Montgomery County will present a free presentation about Free and Affordable Technology for Improving Literacy and Learning on July 19 from 7-9 p.m.

Attendees will learn about tools such as the iPad, Livescribe Pen, Kindle, Skype, Text to Speech and Voice Recognition Software, free online sites, Google apps, and more.

June 2011 LDAMC Parent Connection

The Learning Disabilities Association of Montgomery County will hold its next Parent Connection support meeting on June 15 from 7-8:30 p.m.

The June meeting will focus on the components of successful reading (skills a reader needs to have) and information about specific programs, products and methods to address those components.
